Meet Shelly Tochluk: Book-Signing

  • 06/20/2019
  • 5:45 PM - 6:45 PM
  • CC Exhibit Hall, UUA Bookstore

After Shelly's workshop, she will be available in the exhibit hall at the UUA Bookstore to sign books, including Living in the Tension: The Quest for a Spiritualized Racial Justice and Witnessing Whiteness: The Need to Talk about Race and How to Do It.

Shelly’s work is particularly well-suited to draw in white people who are reticent, disengaged, or feeling conflicted about racial justice efforts. Most recently, she is speaking out about how white nationalists are targeting white youth. She sees an important opportunity for white people to organize themselves, both youth and adults, to disrupt white nationalists' tactics and draw people further into anti-racism. She would love to connect and share ideas. Stop by to learn more!

Tochluk is an educator, with a background in psychology who spent ten years as a researcher, counselor, and teacher in California’s public schools. She now trains teachers to work with Los Angeles’ diverse school population as a Professor in the Education Department at Mount Saint Mary’s University-Los Angeles. Tochluk's personal dedication to confront issues of race developed first through her participation with UCLA’s NCAA Division-1 All-American Track and Field 4X400 meter relay team and later through her inner city teaching experiences. Shelly currently works with AWARE-LA (Alliance of White Anti-Racists Everywhere-Los Angeles). With this group, she co-created a workshop series that leads white people into a deeper understanding of their personal relationship to race, white privilege, and systemic racism.
